H.R. 676 would expand Medicare for all Americans

September 30, 2009

There is a single payer bill in Congress, H.R. 676, to expand Medicare to all American citizens regardless of age or income. Single payer is not socialized medicine because the doctors and hospitals will remain private.  It is called single payer because the government is the only payer.

It is affordable.  Americans are currently paying enough for health care for all – we just do not receive it because over 30 percent of our money goes to administrative costs and profits.  Single payer would save us $350 billion dollars per year.

There would be no limits on coverage and no deductibles, co-pays or cost sharing in any way.   Single payer includes primary care, emergency care, dental, prescription drugs, long term care, mental heath services, and preventative care among other things.  If you want a service not covered by the plan, you still have the option to buy private insurance for those services.

Single payer will allow our doctors to make better and more timely decisions for us, because it will cut out the middle man.  Currently many medical decisions are made by HMO executives who have their profits in mind.  Single payer will free our doctors to do their jobs with our health in mind.

This is truly the bill that will give us choice: the choice to receive care regardless of financial circumstances, choice of physician, choice of a variety of care services and the right to make the healthy choice.
